Design principles

Design principles will change depending on the brand but as a general rule, these macro and micro principles are where I begin.

  • Make it quick – make the most frequent tasks easy and the less frequent tasks achievable.
  • Make it focused – support the way each user wants to work and make the default settings useful.
  • Make it contextual – surface the right tools at the right time.
  • Make it as simple as it needs to be – reduce cognitive load and give everything purpose.
  • Make it navigable – give the user a sense of place and context
  • Make the product useable – effective, efficient, and satisfying
  • Make the product accessible to as many people as possible/needed – Colour, contrast, sizes, typography, icons + text etc.
  • Group similar content together for visual hierarchy
  • Proximity – Give elements defined areas and room to breath
  • Consistent layout for retained focus
  • Align content for cognitive ease, speed (scanning)
  • Align text left (right for eastern countries)
  • Reduce scrolling as much as possible to avoid breaking data analysis
  • Use grids where possible for flexibility and alignment
  • Use no more than 4 font sizes
  • Remember people can only remember an average of 7(+-2) items in memory at once
  • Keep your highlights simple and as few colours as possible and keep the colour choices cohesive
  • Repeat patterns where possible
  • Keep buttons same shape and size
